Could the €190 Million EuroMillions Winner Be From Ireland?

Could the €190 Million EuroMillions Winner Be From Ireland?

There are no prizes for guessing which event had western Europe thoroughly gripped on Friday night, but the €190 million reward that was up for grabs went the way of a EuroMillions ticket holder from Spain. The lucky playslip was purchased on the holiday island of Gran Canaria, so could there still yet be hope for Ireland’s chances of snatching the joint largest jackpot prize in the game’s history?

Irish Players Abroad

The sun-kissed island of Gran Canaria is often a haven for tourists who want to soak up the rays while relaxing on glorious sandy beaches. Around four million holidaymakers journey to the Atlantic archipelago every year, with around 70,000 hailing from the Emerald Isle. It is certainly a destination favoured by Irish citizens looking to relax and forget about the stresses and strains of everyday life back home.

With such an influx of Irish residents swarming around the island, it is entirely possible that a tourist could have purchased the winning ticket and matched the numbers 1, 9, 15, 19, 25 and the Lucky Stars 1 and 7. Should this be the case, one Irish lottery fan may have just rounded off their holiday with a mammoth EuroMillions win.

The winning ticket was purchased from one of the many shops contained within the El Mirador Shopping Centre in Las Palmas. In an interview with Spanish media, the store’s owner, Esther Gloria Almeida Sanchez, was quick to point out her disbelief: “I did not not expect to sell this big prize because it was a lot of money, but last night they called me from the Delegation of the Canary Islands to tell me that we had given 190 million euros.”

Additional Irish Joy

While EuroMillions enthusiasts back home may have missed out on the jackpot, one lucky ticket holder had cause for celebration after winning the top prize in the EuroMillions Plus draw. The prosperous player correctly matched the numbers 3, 22, 36, 38 and 45 to scoop €500,000 and become the supplementary game’s fifth winner in six draws.

The winning entry was sold at Barry’s Mace in Blackwater, Co Clare, but the shop’s owner, Lance O’Neill, was unable to confirm whether the victor was from the area: “It’s a small village and it would be lovely if it was somebody local who has won,” he said. “But it could also have been anybody driving through going to East Clare.”
