“Nobody ever wins.” It’s a line that every regular lottery player will have heard at some point. And while it is of course important to play responsibly, there’s no escaping the fact that, as the popular saying goes, you’ve got to be in it to win it.
One man from Dublin clearly had that thought in mind whenever he purchased his EuroMillions tickets. Despite his wife repeatedly telling him that he was wasting his time by playing the lottery, the man continued to stake on his set of lucky numbers in the hope of winning big.
And this week, the Dubliner’s determination finally paid off as he picked up a cheque for €500,000 after winning the top prize in the supplementary EuroMillions Plus game.
“I was sitting in the car outside the school waiting to collect my daughter when I remembered to check my EuroMillions ticket,” the man said of the magical moment when he realised that he’d won, going on to describe the “overwhelming sense of relief” he felt when the reality of the situation hit home.
“[My wife was] always nagging me for buying my Lotto and EuroMillions tickets;” he said of his love for the lotteries, “she used to tell me that I hadn’t a chance of winning.” With his cheque in hand, however, the Dubliner joked that he was happy to prove his wife wrong.
Although the teasing is likely to continue for some time yet, the EuroMillions winner is already making plans to splash out on his wife for her upcoming birthday, after which the couple plans to buy a house in the local area and enjoy a life free of rent and mortgage payments.
Tonight’s EuroMillions jackpot currently stands at a whopping €38 million, with the Ireland-only EuroMillions Plus offering a guaranteed jackpot of €500K. Will you be playing a cheeky line?
