Galway Girl: I Had €24 Left Before Big EuroMillions Win
A lucky EuroMillions player from Galway has admitted she had almost no money left in her bank account before she landed a life-changing €297,860. Niamh O’Meara had needed to resort to using sellotape to keep her registration plate from falling off her car as she was so short of cash, but says she had always been confident that she would win the lottery one day.

Niamh matched five main numbers and one Lucky Star in the EuroMillions draw on Tuesday 4th April, having bought a Quick Pick ticket at SuperValu, Clonfert Avenue, Portumna in Ballinasloe. She has now come forward to Irish National Lottery headquarters in Dublin to pick up her winnings and reveal just how much of a relief it was to win. She said: “This came at the perfect time for me. I was down to the last €24 in my bank account.”
Niamh has already splashed out on a new car and booked a holiday for next week, while she has also set her sights on a new house. Having played the lottery every week since turning 18, the lucky winner feels that it was fated for her to become a big winner. She said: “I always felt I would win the lottery, and that one day I would be here in the National Lottery picking up a cheque. Our mam passed away a few years ago and in some ways I think this was a gift she has sent me.”
As Niamh begins her celebrations with family and friends, another Irish player has been given cause to smile after winning the €500,000 EuroMillions Plus top prize on Tuesday night. The winning ticket was sold in Tipperary.
There will be another chance to enjoy EuroMillions on Friday evening, when the jackpot will stand at a huge €17 million, while there will also be a top prize of €8 million on offer in Saturday’s Irish Lotto following a rollover last night. You can choose numbers online or pick up tickets from any authorised retailer. Good luck!
