‘Oldest Irish Lotto Syndicate’ Claims Huge Prize
The principal of a special school in Athlone, Co Westmeath, has described her staff syndicate as perhaps ‘the oldest in Ireland’ after the lucky group scooped over €52,000. Set up 30 years ago when the Irish National Lottery started, the syndicate’s persistence has finally been rewarded and the winning members are now looking forward to splashing out on some Christmas shopping.

Irish Lotto Syndicate
The 29-strong syndicate, from St Hilda’s Special School, won the prize after matching five main numbers plus the Bonus Ball in the Irish Lotto draw on Wednesday 11th October. Syndicate secretary Geraldine West checked the numbers during Storm Ophelia earlier this week and the staff were called in to hear the good news, as well as celebrate with cake and champagne.
Pia Farrell, the school’s head teacher, said it had been a great day for everyone at the school, which teaches pupils with moderate, severe and profound learning disabilities, between the ages of four and 18. The school currently has 42 pupils and plans have been put in place to raise funds for a sensory garden.
The syndicate had initially only had nine members, and now features a mix of current and former employees. Farrell explained: “Like the school the syndicate has grown over the years and includes teachers, special needs assistants and support staff. We may be the oldest Lotto syndicate in Ireland."
